La Traviata, Opera Ontario 1999
(with Carlo Schibelli)

Richard has always loved opera music from his earliest memories of Caruso and Marilyn Horne recordings. He attended an opera workshop on a whim (with a little prodding from his voice teacher) and ended up landing the lead role of Alfredo in La Traviata. Since then he has performed in Il Tabarro and La Boheme, in solo roles with Centuries Opera and North York Opera (Toronto), and in Aida, La Traviata, Madama Butterfly, and 15 others, in chorus roles with Opera Hamilton.

Richard often listened to the Saturday afternoon Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts. Favourite singers over the years have included Enrico Caruso, Marilyn Horne, Beverly Sills, Sheryll Mills, Richard Tucker, and Robert Merrill. More recent favourites are Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Angela Georgiu, and of course Cynthia Lawrence with whom he appeared in Madam Butterfly.

Richard has had the great pleasure and privilege to work with internationally renowned stars such as Richard Margison, Bruce Sledge, Emilia Boteva, Gary Relyea, and many top Canadian stars such as Laura Whalen, Stuart Howe, and Shannon Mercer. Some of his favourite characters are: Alfredo, from La Traviata, and Canio from Il Pagliacci. As a boy he was attracted to the tenor and soprano arias because of the soaring music, but was also enamored by the earthiness of the baritones, basses, and mezzo-sopranos. After his voice changed he began singing baritone but has shifted to tenor and a much more comfortable range.

"Once, I almost got to sing with Luciano Pavarotti. Then he cancelled the concert."
